They've also publicly stated they're taking 12% of a game's revenue rather than the industry-standard store cut, which is almost triple that figure. Epic is taking a step to fund indie games the same way that AAA is funded - with deals worked out beforehand, but paying devs rather than suits. But, there's a little bit more to it, too. Most importantly we get to make the game we want to make with 100% creative control. We can afford to not crunch for a year straight.

We can hire additional help if we need it. Already, we've hired an extra engineer to help deliver more features, and we have the money to pay our fantastic sound designers. We want to make the best game we can, and we now have the time, resources, and support we need to make Airborne Kingdom amazing. We know it may sound like we just took the most lucrative deal available, but rest assured that we are putting that money back into the game.

We could make the game that we wanted, on the timeline we wanted, hiring the contractors we needed, with full freedom and autonomy. And what did they want for all of this? Only exclusivity. They offered to fund our game, provide marketing support, and give us a sales guarantee. We've also heard too many stories of indies floundering in publisher payback hell (the most public one is Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, for which you can look up a very transparent blog post, but in the indie circles these stories are dishearteningly common). We had a lot of interest from publishers, but most required a combination of factors we weren't comfortable with - a strict schedule, bad financial terms, influence on the game's design, etc. And to spend that time and to hire the right people, we needed funding. We all saw this idea deserved more time and energy. Our original goal was to self-fund our game in a year, but having others' play it, that clearly wasn't good enough anymore. After seeing reactions, it was obvious people were excited for Airborne Kingdom. Near the end of 2018, after about six months of prototyping work, we had small slice we could share with friends, and some screenshots we could show the media. Story time, this gets a bit in the weeds: This post is more lengthy than some of the interviews you'll read online, but we want to be fully transparent, so here goes. We're happy to answer your questions, but first we want to explain why we made this choice. While this is exciting news to share, we know there's been some internet flame around these exclusive deals.
